This policy was put forth by Mayor Marc McGovern and co-sponsored by councilors Mallon & Toomey to improve the living conditions of our eight firehouses.

History of Employer Contributions Several facts of life exist in the insurance industry and certainly our Fund is no exception.  Medical trend, the cost of providing/receiving medical care rises much quicker than any other inflationary indicator. The annual average medical trend for our insurance Fund over the last 14 years was 9.64%.

Financial Update As we approach the halfway mark for the year the Fund is on track to perform as projected.  If everything stays on course we can expect to add slightly to our growing reserves.  Reserves are used to smooth out the rough times when claims spike in order to keep premiums and benefits steady.

Annual Board of Trustees Workshop Every August the Board of Trustees meets with staff to review the current year’s budget and staff’s proposal for the following year’s budget.  Before the following year’s budget is approved the Board must decide what, if any, changes must be made to the premium structure or the benefits offered.

At 12:23 p.m. on Sunday, June 17th Local 2086 members responded to several reports of a small brush fire in the open space northeast of Northridge Elementary School in Highlands Ranch. First arriving Brush 18 found a quarter acre grass fire moving at a slow to moderate rate of spread uphill and toward homes on Fox Hunt Circle.
EMS Open House

We want to thank everyone for a successful 2018 EMS Open House. The event took place June 16th at Station 63 and hundreds of attendees learned how SMFR and our various community partners keep us safe. Attendees also enjoyed numerous demonstrations from Arapahoe County Sheriff’s K9 units, Bomb Squad, and Local 2164 members ended the day with an extrication demo.

Smoke Detectors

Today the members walked the 1100 block of Remington and White streets handing out fire prevention literature and installing smoke detectors. Thursday the 7th of June, the department and multiple surrounding companies operated at a 3 alarm fire at 1118 Remington Street.

This year there were 20 essays submitted by soon to be college freshman sons and daughters of our members who donate to our Firefighters Charities. A great job was done by all who submitted essays. The committee had the difficult task of selecting 2 male and 2 female essays.

Congratulations go out to the DFD's newest Deputy Chief, Bill Lounsbury.  D/C Lounsbury was promoted and sworn in from Captain to Deputy Chief in a ceremony at City Hall's City Council chambers on June 6, 2018.  Deputy Chief Lounsbury is a 26 year veteran of the DFD and will continue to work on B Group as Shift Commander.
Fire destroys clubhouse at Western Golf & Country Club in Redford

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - Crews battled a massive fire in Redford Township Friday morning. A fire broke out at the Western Golf and Country Club just before 5:30 a.m. The club is on Kinloch, near Beech Daly and Five Mile Road.  The smoke can be seen for miles, with the flames pouring through the roof.

On Saturday June 9, 2018, Lt. Jack C. Zoppo, Baltimore City Fire and a member of I.A.F.F. Local 964 was fondly remembered during a check presentation to Johns Hopkins Cancer Center. The presentation took place at Engine 6, Ladder 1, Battalion 2 - City of Baltimore (Jack's Fire House). More than $17,000.

At 4:27 p.m. on Friday Jun 8th, Local 2086 and 2164 members responded to numerous 911 reports of a structure fire near West Mineral Avenue and West Long Avenue. A large plume of black smoke was already visible for miles as crews were responding. First arriving Ladder 12 found two single family homes both heavily involved with fire at 7951 and 7961 South Bemis Circle.

At 3:43 p.m. on Friday June 8th, Local 2164 members responded to a house fire 8384 Feather Grass Court in Douglas County. Neighbors called 911 after seeing heavy black smoke and flames coming from the back of the home. First arriving Engine 42 and Medic 42 found heavy fire on the rear of the house extending into the attic of the 1st and 2nd floors.
Twenty Mile Road Multi Family Structure Fire

At 06:39 on Friday June, 8th  Local 2164 members responded to an apartment building on fire at 11038 Twenty Mile Road. First arriving members from Station 41 found a large 3-story building under construction with smoke coming from 3 sides of the top floor and attic. All of the workers safely evacuated without injuries and were accounted for.

June 4, 2018 – At 8:17 p.m., Crews were dispatched to a fire alarm activation in the Contour 39 apartment complex, near Yosemite and Kimmer Dr. As crews investigated, their 4-Gas meter activated alerting crews to increased levels of an unknown chemical. Haz-mat 38 was dispatched and crews evacuated nearby residences as a precaution.

He’s been focused on the community for 25 years. SMFR and Littleton Fire Rescue came together in celebration of “Handsome Rob” Hanson as he listened to his last tones at Station 37. Rob’s legacy, hard work, and doing what’s best for the community broke boundaries and connected Littleton Fire and South Metro Fire over the last two decades.
